Oh my god I loved this book.It was full of different feelings like you could be happy for the main character and then something happens and you feel bad for the girl. She's had a hard life. It's a good book for people who really love touching stories.

Feminist too?
I read this a really long time ago -- maybe 5 years? -- but I remember loving it, too! One of the things I seem to recall is that it is a really FEMINIST book, in which the author was trying to show what women can do on their own. I even think she connected that with honeybees, in which the worker bees are all female, and they keep the hive going... Am I right? Does this sound familiar? If so, I think this is a book that all the girls in book club should read -- not just for the touching story, but for the realization of our strength and possibility!!!

Re: The Secret Life of Bees (GENERAL)
This is slightly random: the parts where she has to kneel on the grits as punishment; I didn't understand that... I've never heard of kneeling on grits as punishment, and I dont really see how it is one.
I agree to what Ms. Baker said; the majority of the characters are women and it seems very feminist in a way.

I'm not 100% sure, but my dad used to eat them, so I think that grits are really sharp before they are cooked. They're like tiny little rocks, almost. Imagine kneeling on gravel, and then imagine that the gravel chunks are miniscule with even more sharp edges per square inch. I wouldn't want to do it!!!

Grits and the book!
Grits are very sharp and "gritty" '' Trust me, I spent many years in the south!
I finally started this book. I'm loving it!

Hi All,
If you were waiting for the movie to come to Farmington you missed it! I know Bummer right! I went to work last Friday before vacation and they were taking it a part it played a week--I am sorry I would have let you know but I hadn't worked since Thanksgiving so I didn't know-- I guess we will have to wait for it to come out on DVD or pay an arm and a leg to see it in the CITY!
My aunt watched it and said it was a really great movie!!
