The Tenth Circle (GENERAL) Empty Bethel, Maine

Post  Hemi'sMom Wed Oct 22, 2008 3:45 pm

I just wanted to comment that I thought it was funny that this book takes place in Bethel, Maine but they go to Bethel High instead of Telstar--and they also have a Hockey team which I don't think Telstar has. It probably doesn't matter to people who have never been to Bethel but I wonder why Jodi Picoult didn't use the real high school name. I realize the book is a work of fiction but why not make up a fake town to go with the fake name of the high school--
Also do you think it is weird hockey is a big sport at this school why not skiing? Do you think that is a perception of people not from Maine that all our high schools play hockey--
Just posting some thoughts--respond if you want!

The Tenth Circle (GENERAL) Empty No kidding -- it drove me nuts too!

I totally agree... and it made Jodi Picoult drop about five points in my integrity-meter. She lived in Maine! She knows the state! Why pick a real town and then fictionalize everything about it? And why perpetuate stereotypes about hockey? That's just so bizarre. Why didn't she make everyone a lobsterman, too, while she was at it?

On page 150 there is a quote that I thought might warrant some discussion:

"She (Laura) was forced to consider the startling fact that the love of her life might not actually be someone with whom she could spend a lifetime."

Do you think this happens to people a lot? How did this quote make you feel? It made me feel sad--I am a hopeless romantic my motto always was I am not going to marry the person I can live with forever I am going to marry the person I can't live without! (I think I stole that somewhere so don't quote me!!
